Dietary Silicon(Si)

Monomethylsilanetriol (MMST) is converted by stomach acid to Orthosilicic acid (OSA), which is a source of Dietary Silicon (Si), which can positively influence bone density, structure, and strength, as well as collagen metabolism in other connective tissues (Jurkic et al., 2013), for example tendons, ligaments and cartilage, which are rich in Silicon.

Numerous scientific studies agree OSA is attributable to observed and perceived benefits of Si supplementation to both horses and humans, including mineral metabolism and bone health (Pritchard et al.,2020).

Which means that feeding your horse a high quality source of OSA, such as is found in CONNEXION®, offers you reassurance that you are uniquely supporting their soundness and athleticism.

CONNEXION® contains Orgono® Living Slica®'s Acacia Gum-MMST. This provides Si at a 64% bioavailability (absorption rate), as proven by independent clinical research, which is at least 10 x more than other standard Si sources.

The microencapsulation of MMST with the natural fibre prebiotic, Acacia Gum, provides stability in powder form, which is unique to this patented ingredient, as used in CONNEXION® (Silicium Laboratories, 2018).

The feed rate for CONNEXION® provides a performance horse with 0.3mg Si/kg BW/day, meaning a 500kg horse would receive 150mg of Si per day, which is the same amount as used in a successful equine research study in young racing horses, which found a correlation between Si supplementation and the distance traveled before injury, which indicated bioavailable Si supplementation may help prevent athletic injury (Nielsen et al, 1993).

Lysine and Threonine have been suggested as the two first limiting amino acids for growth in foals and Lysine, Threonine and Methionine are generally assumed to be the first three limiting amino acids, according to research. In other words, Methionine needs Threonine to work and Threonine needs Lysine to work. CONNEXION® provides these three amino acids in ratios aligned with the Nutrient Requirements of Horses (National Research Council, 2007).

Essential Amino Acids cannot be synthesized (made) by the body and therefore must be provided in the diet.

Within the Essential Amino Acid category, limiting (indispensable) Amino Acids will limit protein synthesis (production) if not present in adequate amounts. Lysine, Threonine and Methionine are all classified as both Essential and Limiting Amino Acids.

Lysine plays a major role in Calcium absorption, an essential role in collagen formation and helps build muscle protein. Collagen is a substance necessary for connective tissues such as cartilage and tendon (Amino Acids Guide, 2023).

Threonine has an essential role in protein synthesis and is metabolised (converted) in the body to important components of collagen, elastin and muscle tissue (Mok and Urschel, 2020).

The known functions for methionine for the horse include but are not restricted, either directly or indirectly to (Barnett, 2022):

• Normal muscle function.

• Muscle mass.

• Tendon and ligament strength.
